Abstract

This paper focuses his attention on a mid-nineteenth-century amateur dialect dictionary. It is one of the first vocabularies compiled outside the Neapolitan area, written by the Irpinian priest Salvatore Nittoli. The Vocabolario, created with the intention of helping the dialect-speaking population to an active understanding of the Italian language, has many features that link it methodologically to the many Italian dialect dictionaries, written with the intention of protecting the dialect and at the same time favoring the national language.
