About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Archaeologies between East and West is the new journal of the Interdepartmental Centre for Archaeology Services of the University of Naples L'Orientale that replaces the Newsletter of Archaeology - CISA (ISSN 2036-6353). The periodical, with an annual cadence, aims to offer a space for comparison on aspects, themes, changes in approaches and methods without areal or chronological distinction. The journal is deliberately declined in the plural and with very broad geographical and cultural horizons to emphasize not only the interdisciplinary character that archaeological research has now assumed, but also to stimulate reflection on innovative sectors and approaches. The idea behind the new publishing initiative is to host thematic in-depth studies, including experimental and transdisciplinary ones, in which different methodologies of documentation, survey, data management and interpretation can converge.
The journal contains three sections: Essays, Discoveries and Reviews. The first section is intended to accommodate scholarly essays with no limitations on geographical, cultural and chronological areas; the second section reports on excavation and study activities; and the third section reflects on important new publications. The length of the contributions (in Italian or English) must respect the following criteria: Essays: 50,000-100,000 characters and 10-15 images; Discoveries: 10,000-20,000 characters including spaces and 5 images; Reviews: 5,000-10,0000 characters including spaces.
Publication frequency
Single annual volume. Articles are published online according to Online First and are marked with a unique DOI (Digital Object Identifier) that remains the same even when the contribution is included in the full annual issue of the journal.
Peer Review Process
Contributions proposed for publication are subject to peer review by two or more referees, at least one of whom is external to the scientific committee. Peer reviewing is double anonymous, and referees are identified, in relation to the field of research, from scholars and experts in the field of known expertise. Publishers, authors and referees manage on the SHARE (Scholarly Heritage and Access to Research) platform the operations of submission, review and, in case of acceptance of the contribution, its publication.
Corrections
To encourage debate following the dissemination of edited contributions, the journal accepts the publication of letters to the editor and possible reply to notes from the author. The published article is not edited, except for editorial errors. In the case of serious errors that significantly affect or impair the reader's understanding or evaluation of the article, the journal publishes a correction note. The published article is left unchanged. The journal promotes the self-correcting nature of science and scientific integrity.
Anti-plagiarism measures
All proposed articles are carefully checked to detect any misuse of other texts, including by using anti- plagiarism software. When plagiarism is detected, we proceed as recommended in the guidelines drawn up by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
If, on the other hand, readers were to point out plagiarism in an article, the Editor:
- informs the person who reported the abuse of the procedure, which will be initiated immediately;
- checks the degree to which the article actually coincides with the allegedly plagiarized text(s);
- informs the entire editorial staff of the incident in order to collectively decide on the next steps;
- forwards to the author of the article the evidence resulting from the comparison with any plagiarized texts and ask him to account for it.
Should it turn out that the author has indeed plagiarized other texts, the Director:
- inform the author of the plagiarized contribution and the editor of the journal and/or series in which it appeared;
- publishes the official retraction of the article that appeared;
- withdraw the contribution from the Internet;
- does not allow the plagiarist new publications for five years.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides open access to its contents, believing that making research freely available to the public enhances the global exchange of knowledge. This is in accordance with the BOAI (Budapest Open Access Initiative) definition of open access.
Archiving

Each article and each book is assigned an NBN (National Bibliography Number), which is useful for long-term preservation.
