This article examines the role played by Contini’s method in defining Cesare Segre’s approach to textual analysis, an approach poised between attention to the word and concern for what exceeds it. After outlining several key moments in the Italian reception of Spitzerian stylistic criticism, the article concludes with a comparison of the positions developed on this subject by the two scholars.
