This essay aims to explore the impact of digital media on the understanding of kitsch and its relationship to art through the concept of “digital kitsch”. Digital kitsch is understood here as the prevailing form of creativity in digital media: democratized yet often superficial, facilitated by tools that make visual literacy accessible but reduce avant-garde strategies to reproducible clichés. This phenomenon encompasses a wide range of expressions, from amateur online creations to professional productions, from low-resolution images to CGI, from virtual environments to AI-generated graphics. If kitsch is the hallmark of modernity, digital kitsch embodies the dominant aesthetic of the postmodern and postdigital era.
