About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Reti Medievali is an international academic journal devoted to all aspects of medieval civilization. It was created in 1998 by a group of scholars from various Italian universities in response to the uneasiness caused by the fragmentation of historiographic languages and research subjects. A large number of historians subsequently gathered around the initiative, willing to discuss with their peers beyond their respective chronological, thematic and disciplinary specialisations, and to experiment with ways to apply information technology to research, and to communicate knowledge.
Despite its name RM Rivista is not intended to reflect a printed journal in the strict sense, for it presents neither an imitation nor a rendition of the structure of a printed journal into computer technology. Instead, it is specifically devised in order to emphasize some characteristics of the new communication technology: the relative inexpensiveness of production and issuing, easiness of accessibility and widespread circulation favour fast updates, format flexibility, hypertextual language, the possibility for a multimedial edition, interactive usage and easier reproducibility.
Those readers who would like to be informed on the contributions which are published in RM Rivista are requested to fill in the registration form. In accordance with legislation on privacy protection, the submitted information will neither be transmitted to third parties nor be used for other purposes.
The authors who intend to submit a contribution to Reti Medievali are requested to read the Author Guidelines. They will be required first and foremost to write to the Editors for beeing registered as Authors in order to log in and initiate the article submission procedure which is articulated into five steps. Reti Medievali, which has developed in synergy with the world of libraries, is present in the catalogues of hundreds of universities and research institutions worldwide. Librarians are gently invited to send their notifications to the editorial address: redazione@retimedievali.it.
Section Policies
Discussions
Short critical essays or texts dealing with an historiographical or research problem, or moving from a recently published work, or discussing problems of cultural politics and publishing; they aim at a scientific discussion open to further contributions from the readers in possible forums. Among the purposes of this section there is also the prompt collection and publication of texts and materials produced in seminars and workshops in order to avoid the waste of the first-hand results of observations and researches.

Materials and Notes
Bibliographical and documentary reviews, outlines of works in progress or of observations arisen in the course of a research. Besides these materials, promptly issued by RM, we aim at collecting the ideas and suggestions elaborated in the preparatory phases of projects, conferences and publications: such a patrimony often gets lost as it undergoes subsequent reworking or is considered of minor importance; on the contrary, it deserves to be known just because of its nature of “open work”.

Archives
Organic corpuses of documentary texts or of data drawn from them, structured into specialized archives, originating from concluded or ongoing researches. This section aims less at the accumulation of sources than at proposing and experiencing new forms of presentation of the researches carried on on large documentary sets.

Hypertexts
This section is the most closely connected with the innovative potentials of the new communication tools; it contains hypertext analysis of sources, texts, new forms of presentation of documentary sets or experiments of building hypertexts on medieval history subjects. It aims at illustrating how the new tools may influence the research language. One area of this section may be devoted to observations on the new forms of the text.

Publication ethics and publication malpractice
The publication of an article in a peer-reviewed journal is an essential model for RM Journal.
It is necessary to agree upon standards of expected ethical behavior for all parties involved in the act of publishing: the author, the journal editor, the peer reviewer and the publisher.
RM Journal's ethic statements are based on COPE's Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors.
Authors, Editors and referees are expected to know and share the following principles.
Duties of Editors
Publication decisions
The editors of the RM Journals are responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published. The editors may be guided by the policies of the journal's editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. The editors may confer with other editors or reviewers in making this decision.
Fair play
The editors at any time evaluate manuscripts for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.
Confidentiality
The editors and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
Disclosure and conflicts of interest
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's own research without the express written consent of the author.
Duties of Reviewers
Contribution to Editorial Decisions
Peer review assists the editors in making editorial decisions and through the editorial communications with the author may also assist the author in improving the paper.
Promptness
Any selected referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should notify the editor and excuse himself from the review process.
Confidentiality
Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editors.
Standards of Objectivity
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Referees should express their views clearly with supporting arguments.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument had been previously reported should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editors attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.
Disclosure and Conflict of Interest
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
Duties of Authors
Reporting standards
Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Underlying data should be represented accurately in the paper. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
Data Access and Retention
If applicable, authors are asked to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editorial review, and should be prepared to provide public access to such data, and should in any event be prepared to retain such data for a reasonable time after publication.
Originality and Plagiarism
The authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited or quoted.
Multiple, Redundant or Concurrent Publication
An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.
Acknowledgement of Sources
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.
Authorship of the Paper
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be acknowledged or listed as contributors. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate co-authors and no inappropriate co-authors are included on the paper, and that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission for publication.
Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest
All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.
Fundamental errors in published works
When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editors or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper.
Plagiarism Policy
All articles submitted to RM Journal will be checked to detect plagiarism, also using software such as Compilatio, Turnitin or iThenticate.
A specific process is followed to manage a case of plagiarism.
RM Journal follows the guidelines contained in the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) flowcharts (http://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts).
In the case of suspected plagiarism in a published article:
1) The person who advised RM Journal of the situation is informed about the process to be followed.
2) The contributions are compared to check the degree of copying.
3) All Editors of RM Journal are informed and asked for their comments.
4) The author of the article in question is contacted with documentary evidence of the case of plagiarism and is asked for a response.
If the author is found guilty of plagiarism:
1) The editor of the journal/series in which the original plagiarised contribution was published and the authors of the plagiarised article/book are informed;
2) RM Journal publishes an official retraction of the paper;
3) The article is withdrawn from the RM Journal site;
4) RM Journal will not publish any article of the author concerned for a period of 5 years.

Archiving
Thanks to the University Center for Libraries at Federico II University of Naples, Reti Medievali Rivista adheres to the legal deposit procedure for online publications Magazzini Digitali, the infrastructure for long-term preservation of electronic and online disseminated documents published in Italy, created by the National Libraries of Florence, Rome and Venice Marciana. Each article is assigned a National Bibliography Number (NBN), which is a unique number, that is useful for long-term storage, maintenance and preservation.
On 30 March 2012, Reti Medievali furthermore signed an agreement with the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, in order to guarantee the long-term archiving of its journal and e-books on the servers of the German library, in the frame of the Digitale Bibliothek/Langzeitarchivierung project.
RM Rivista is also included in the Public Knowledge Project (PKP PLN) LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) network, that intends to ensure decentralized and distributed storage, long-term preservation and perpetual access to the original version of the journal. Continue...
The University Center for Libraries at Federico II University of Naples participates in the creation of a national LOCKSS infrastructure, aiming at ensuring to journals (including RM Rivista) an additional long-term digital preservation environment, distributed among various Italian libraries.
