The paper discusses Chris Wickham’s volume (The Donkey and the Boat), placing it within the historiographical debate of the last decades on the economic history of the Mediterranean and central-northern Italy. It highlights the innovative elements in the English historian’s perspective and analyses his model for explaining growth and take-off, advocating future lines of research on the topic.
