Abstract

In old Italian the verb parere oscillates between the meanings of ‘to appear clearly’ and ‘to seem’. Dante, in the sonnet Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare and in general in the Vita nova, would instead eliminate, according to modern criticism, any ambiguity: starting from Gianfranco Contini it is in fact believed that the apparition of Beatrice is represented in the pamphlet as a universal phenomenon and not as a subjective perception. In this contribution I try to reconstruct the prehistory of Dante’s parere.
