Abstract

At the end of the 14th century, the Kingdom of Aragon established an autonomous fiscal system, dependent on its principal state institution, the Diputación del General. The aim of this paper is to examine how a specific sector of the Aragonese merchant elite organized itself during part of the 15th century to monopolize the management of this customs taxation, the General Tax or the generalidades of Aragon, which played a decisive role in the economic and institutional development of the kingdom. This study seeks to highlight the interests generated around the leasing and collection of these taxes, extending beyond their economic benefits to include their social and political implications.
