Abstract

The festa del Castello d’amore, one of the most prominent examples of medieval feasting culture in Northern Italy, is famous because of its detailed account in Rolandino's Cronica (given here in a new elaborated and partly annotated German translation). The feast is regarded as the trigger for the war between Venice, Padova and Treviso in autumn 1215. Through a detailed analysis of the sources I argue for a new dating of this event to Whit Monday, 8th of June 1215. The occasion for which this feast was organised at Spineda was a peace agreement between the commune of Treviso and some major noble families on 1st of March 1215. Within this context, the late-medieval Cronaca Foscariniana/Torriana, which has previously received little attention in the scholarship, can be seen as an important source.
