Abstract

During Dante’s political activity, the relationships between Bologna and Florence were tight and well documented. Between 1296 and 1299 Bologna fought a war against the Marquis of Este and the Ghibellines of Romagna in which Florence was first allied and than arbitrator on request of Boniface VIII. The documentation of Bologna shows variable and changing alliances, influenced by the pope and by politics of partes. The language of documents shows how the terms “Guelph” and “Ghibelline” were used in a relative sense, to identify allies and enemies.
