Based on documents from monastic archives, the article aims to investigate some aspects offemale monasticism in Ravenna. More specifically, the paper considers the links between fe-male monasteries and the elites of the city, the way nunneries interacted with society, whether the female monasteries developed areas of power and if it is possible to identify specific aspects in this process. Land properties and the relationships that the nuns were able to build with the most important sectors of society played an essential role in creating their own sphere of action. However, a few limitations (for instance a diminished interest of the archbishop, pope and emperor in nunneries), influenced the assertion of women’s monasteries, leading also to a increased selectivity with regard to female monastic communities.
