Abstract

The beginning of the essays examines the reasons why the university teachers of medieval history in Florence (from Gaetano Salvemini to Giovanni Cherubini) paid little attention to the historical figure of Dante. After that, the author examines five essays that Ernesto Sestan wrote on the occasion of the 1965 centenary. The themes under study are Dante’s relationship with Florence, his political thought, his vision of history and the use of historical people in the Commedia.
