The essay is the result of a research about the phoné of Carmelo Bene carried out by Paolo Prota and Rosario Diana with the patronage and support of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and the Istituto per la Storia del Pensiero Filosofico e Scientifico Moderno – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Naples. The other result of the research was an installation – Phoné / Bene (Schedario) – dedicated to four important works by Carmelo Bene: Manfred (1979), Pinocchio (1981), Variazioni per voce dai “Canti orfici” di Dino Campana (1982), Voce dei Canti di Giacomo Leopardi (1998). In the installation and in the essay the emphasis is placed on the musical dimension of the voice and its difference from the music, the song and the Sprechgesang.
