Abstract

The essay proposes to illustrate the status quaestionis about the relationship between urban space
and local authorities in southern cities between the 15th and 16th centuries, through an analysis of
the institutional framework and its influence on the configuration of places of power. This will be
followed by a comparative study, which will show how southern centres were integrated into the
main urban development processes of the rest of Europe, ascertaining the existence of a civic
identity rooted in local communities.
