Abstract

The period following the death of Frederick II was characterised by rivalries for the Sicilian throne. In order to consolidate their rule, Conrad IV, Conradin, Manfred and finally Charles I of Anjou appointed loyals to counts or deposed opposing nobles. Only a few counts managed to maintain their position, primarily because they were firmly anchored in the Kingdom and quickly decided in favour of the Angevins after the change of dynasty.
