Abstract

Jewish Intellectuals and Accademia Pontaniana: Some Considerations in the Light of Two Recent Publications

Even though Jews played a decisive role in non-Jewish intellectual milieus of Renaissance Italy, scholarly academies never accepted them as regular members. This is why the total absence of Jewish names in membership lists of the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples is not surprising. However, the analysis of Leone Ebreo’s Dialogues on love clearly reveals the close connections of the Iberian author with the literati that gravitated around the Accademia. The article discusses some themes of Leone’s work, as well as the complex history of its publication, in light of two recent monographs on Pontano’s circle and on the mutual influences of Jewish and non-Jewish thought in Renaissance Italy.
