Abstract

This article frames some contemporary songs dedicated to real crime cases within the murder ballad genre, from its first commercial incarnations in the “broadside” format through its reworking in the context of folk revival. With respect to the modern model, both continuity (a connection with true facts and their journalistic accounts) and discontinuity traits (the appearance of a new form of authorship, and the resulting stylistic changes) are identified.
