Abstract

The article addresses the problem of the construction of community identity – perceived as an urgent dilemma in times of nationalism and migration – based on the identification of two types of opposing universal myths: the myths of the foundation of a central city and the myths of exodus, focusing especially on those coming from Judeo-Christian culture. From this analytical perspective, we then propose a reading of Neruda’s Canto General (1950), an epic poem that shows the tension that emerges from the opposition of both types of myths, in the particular context of Latin American literature.
