Author Biography

Alberto Castoldi, University of Bergamo

Alberto Castoldi (1935-2017) was a full professor of French Literature at University of Bergamo, where he was Rector from 1999 to 2009. He directed the Centro Arti Visive (Visual Arts Center), the Centro sulla Contemporaneità (Center on Contemporaneity) and the series of Literature of Bergamo University Press. His research focused on travel literature (Il fascino del colibrì, 1972), the novel between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (Il realismo borghese, 1976), the role of intellectuals in the Thirties (Intellettuali e Fronte Popolare in Francia, 1978), the ‘uncanniness’ (Grandville and Company, 1987; Clérambault. Stoffe e manichini, 1994), the relationship between drugs and literature (Il testo drogato. Droga e letteratura tra Ottocento e Novecento, 1994), the collective imagination in the modern times (Bibliofollia, 2004; Congedi. La crisi dei valori nella modernità, 2010; “In carenza di senso”. Logiche dell’immaginario, 2012; Il Flâneur. Viaggio al cuore della modernità, 2013). He founded and directed the journals Locus Solus, Cahiers de Littérature française (in collaboration with Sorbonne Université), Elephant & Castle.
