Abstract

English article title: New ways of dealing with a centuries-old collective unease. The relevance of Attila József in light of recent Hungarian literary research

This article marks the beginning of a review of what I proposed in 1988 with the volume by Attila József, La coscienza del poeta (The Conscienceof the Poet), based on a first complete edition, in four volumes, of essays, articles, and drafts, both published and unpublished, and on a corpus discovered in the mid-1980s. As at the time, the Italian editorialp roposal is based on intensive discussions with Hungarian scholars,in particular György Tverdota and Béla N. Horváth. The current aimis to reread József's corpus – enriched in 2018 by the critical edition ofthe essays produced by the poet in 1930-1937 – with a view to contributing to the reinterpretation of the work's position (theoretical, poetic, and psychoanalytical) in relation to the ongoing transformation of the Hungarian literary and cultural episteme, and ultimately to producea new annotated edition of Szabad-ötletek jegyzéke két ülésben (List of Free Associations in Two Sessions) from 1936.
