Abstract

Article english title: For a new Gestaltung of space: the evolution of László Péri from painting to architecture in the context of the international Constructivism (1921-1924)

The aim of this paper is to analyze László Péri’s artistic development from painting to architecture between 1921 and 1924 from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective. The invention of his «shaped canvases» (Herzogenrath 1973, 42) is linked here both to the theory of Gleichwertigkeit (equivalence) of the artist Arthur Segal and to the concept of Gestaltung as a method characteristic of the so-called International Constructivism. Péri’s new spatial cognition or Gestaltung of space is the main research interest he shared with Ludwig Hilberseimer and El Lissitzky. A comparison of their works would help to interpret Péri’s architecture turn as a terminus of his constructivist method politically oriented.

Carlotta Castellani, Università degli Studi di Urbino Carlo Bo

Carlotta Castellani (<carlotta.castellani@uniurb.it>) is Assistant professor of Contemporary art at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo. She received her Ph.D. in Art History, Literature and Cultural Studies in a joint program of the Universities of Florence and Paris IV Sorbonne (2016). In 2019 she was a postdoc fellow at the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) in a joint program with the City University of New York (CUNY), since 2020 she is member of the «4A Lab» research group (Max-Planck-Institut and Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz), since 2021 she has been a researcher at the Carlo Bo University of Urbino. Her research interests focus on art and literature periodicals published between the two wars, from a transnational and interdisciplinary perspective. She is author of articles and a monograph in the Berlin journal G: Zeitschrift für die elementare Gestaltung (published by Hans Richter from 1923 to 1926), she has recently published the essays «The Hungarian MA Circle in the Société Anonyme Collection: Sándor Bortnyik, László Moholy-Nagy, and László Péri » (Yale University Art Gallery Bulletin, 2021) and «El Lissitzky and the Biocentric Project “1=1”» (Getty Research Journal, 2022).
