The observation of the territorial dynamics that developed along the southern frontier that separated the kingdom of France from the lands of the Empire highlights an interweaving of strategies that combined military actions, the establishment of jurisdictional rights and the foundation of public opinion. By analysing a large collection of witnesses commissioned by king Louis IX of France in September 1263, this contribution offers some observations about the tensions that, throughout the 13th century, animated the southern banks of the Rhone River. They not only led to the progressive shifting of the ancient border between the two kingdoms, but also contributed to the gradual definition of a sovereign power.
