Abstract

With the publication of The Adversary Emmanuel Carrère decides to leave fiction. Nevertheless, he doesn’t do so because of just poetical reasons, but also due to an inner urge: the first person represents the narrative device which allows you to deal with an agonizing true story, sharing your anguish with the reader. The present contribution investigates the relationship between news and literature in Emmanuel Carrère’s narrative universe. What does it mean for Carrère to be a novelist? What is at stake with the use of the first person? What role is played in his books by the fait divers?
