Abstract

In many ways, Elizabethan England viewed Venice as a model of equitable society, an ideal to be emulated. But Venice at the Globe is concerned with the far less idealized version of Venice, as imagined for the English stage. If Venice is seen as a model for England, it is not a mirror, but an alternative, or even a mirror of England’s least admirable aspects.

Author Biography

Stephen Orgel

Orgel received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1954 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1959. He taught at Stanford until 2017. Emeritus Professor and scholar with a prestigious and international career, Orgel has published widely about literature, theatre, arts, book history. His works have particularly contributed to the academic and cultural debate on the Early Modern Period. He is member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and editor of important book series. He has received numerous awards and fellowships and, recently, he was awarded a honorary Degree by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.
