Abstract

The contribution is intended to analize Il Reverendo (Novelle rusticane, 1883) in order to illustrate how Verga makes ordinary for the reader the narration of an abnormal life, to show in which way perversion and normality coincide in this novella. A thorough examination of the tenses organization revealed that the imperfetto is the favourite tense to tell the Reverendo wickednesses, which seem not so surprising to the ‘choir’ who comments them. The present perfect is often used instead of the past simple and the latter is limited to few occurences with a marking function. In fact, the sections of the novella where the past simple appears correspond to the occasion when various characters, bearing an ethic different from the protagonist’s one, evoke a religious principle, a moral code that should be (and is not) widely shared.
