The Sensory Threshold: ‘Femmage’ as Politics of the Surface

Abstract

This article investigates the sensory and material role of the surface, approaching it through the conceptual and formal lens of Melissa Meyer and Miriam Schapiro’s concept of femmage (1977-78). Drawing on concepts of indexicality, haptic visuality, and feminist visual theory, the study explores how the surface operates not only as a boundary between image and viewer but as an agentive site of meaning. Tracing femmage from 1970s feminist collage practices to contemporary post-digital assemblages, the study offers close readings of works by Su Friedrich, Susan Stein, Anne Bean, and Sara Cwynar. It argues that strategies of fragmentation, layering, and close-up construct surfaces that do not merely show, but perform.

Author Biography

Raffaella Tartaglia, Roma Tre University

Raffaella Tartaglia has obtained her PhD in Landscapes of the Contemporary City: Politics, Techniques, and Visual Studies (curriculum: Cinema and Visual Culture, 37th cycle) at Roma Tre University in 2025, with a thesis titled Behavioral Bodies: Gestures and Identities in Feminist Experimental Film and Other Arts (’70–’90). She has been a Visiting PhD Student at Birkbeck, University of London. Her research interests focus on experimental cinema, contemporary art, and feminist and perceptual issues. She has published essays in journals such as Fata Morgana, European Journal of Women’s Studies, and Mimesis Journal, and has participated in international conferences such as NECS and DRHA. She is a member of the editorial board of the journal Imago. Studies in Cinema and Media and has held teaching and research positions at the Universities of Cassino and Lazio Meridionale, and Roma Tre.
