Abstract

The review examines the essay Il romanzo italiano contemporaneo. Dalla fine degli anni Settanta a oggi (Carocci, Rome 2018) highlighting both its qualities and its flaws. After providing a framework within Italian contemporary literary criticism, the reviewer gives a close reading chapter-by-chapter by discussing the author’s statements. The reviewer concludes emphasising the unresolved identity of the book (between academic textbook and critical essay): its ambiguous nature is probably its peculiarity and, at the same time, its biggest weakness.
